Interview: Anjana Sukhani

While many thespians may tell you they love the challenge of bringing a fictional character to life, there is nothing easier for an actor than accepting a role in which he or she can relate to.

Anjana_100331_350wFor Anjana Sukhani, playing a young college girl with an inferiority complex in Kabir Sadanand’s Tum Milo Toh Sahi was a cinch for just that reason – the actress was easily able to relate to her character.

“I could identify with some traits of my character. When I was in school and college, I also used to feel inferior,” she explained to reporters this week. “I am playing a bold Maharashtrian girl. She is a college girl and also works as an assistant director. She suffers from some kind of inferiority complex and therefore gives the impression to others that she is the one who does everything and that she is the boss, but that’s not the reality.”

Just the same, Anjana believes moviegoers will be able to relate to all the characters presented on screen as easily as she did with her character, stating there is a level of realism, emotion and comedy in each of the characters of Tum Milo Toh Sahi.

“Real-life situations are depicted in a lighter note in the film,” she aptly informed the press. “Surely everyone will be able to identify with some or other character.”

After impressing audiences with a solid performance in last year’s box-office smash hit Golmaal Returns, Anjana added that her ability to relate to the character she plays in Tum Milo Toh Sahi was no accident, as she is very picky about the films she attaches herself to.

Likewise, she expects audiences will be just as picky, meaning she has to pay close attention to the script and deliver an on-screen character that will strike a chord with moviegoers when the film hits theaters this weekend.

“I am sure everyone is choosy, and so am I. If I feel I relate to the concept of what’s being narrated to me,” Anjana told the press, “I will think a hundred times before I say yes, because it is very important what you do. People are going to see you in that light, so it is very, very important that you pick the correct script.”

She obviously selected well in accepting a role in the critically and financially acclaimed Golmaal Returns, and Anjana clearly believes she made the right call in accepting lead roles in Tum Milo Toh Sahi and Farouque Kabir’s upcoming film, Allah Ke Banday, opposite Sharman Joshi.

As long as she continues to make the right calls, audiences will always be able to identify with Anjana and continue to view her in a positive light, irrespective of whatever insecurities she may have.

Tum Milo Toh Sahi opens in wide release on April 2nd.
