FILM INTERVIEW: KAREENA KAPOOR

Bebo and Sallu Unite for a Bollywood Film with "Backbone and Soul" and "Fun and Dance"

Bebo’s sister, Karisma Kapoor, has been talking about a potential return, all while Madame Tussauds has been plotting a traveling wax statue of Bollywood’s femme fatale. Even Madhur Bhndarkar shelled out millions of rupees to net her into Heroine, but these next few days, all Kareena Kapoor can think about is the superbly entertaining Siddique film Bodyguard -- the Reliance Entertainment film that opens on Eid.

A romantic action film starring Raj Babbar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Hazel Keech, and with a special appearance by Katrina Kaif in the item song “Aaya Re Aaya Bodyguard,” Ms. Kapoor says Bodyguard will be a true entertainer that also has substance.

(By Hollywood comparison, think along the lines of Knight and Day or True Lies instead of The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston.)

Bodyguard promises fun and dance. This film has a backbone and soul. Salman Khan has not done a love story for four to five years. Of course, there is action as well,” Bebo told the press, adding that her role of Divya is not like her usual roles of proximate and distant past. “It is very different from whatever I have done. This is a Desi role, and I have a very substantial part in this. I think every viewer always looks for entertainment. Obviously, they want entertainment.”

In portraying a character protected by Sallu, Bodyguard is directed by Siddique and is a remake of Kaavalan, which was originally made down south in Tamil and Malayalam.

Considering its Southie roots, Bodyguard carries a certain weight with it that is rarely found in mainstream Hindi flicks, Ms. Kapoor pointed out. Yet, in the end, Ms. Kapoor elaborated on how Bodyguard is much more a love story than anything else. With her starring in an integral role in the film only helps accentuate that romance element.

“It’s a love story with lots of emotions and drama. If you take the girl out of it, there is no film. I won’t do a film where I might get lost. I am not gung-ho about song and dance,” Bebo said. “When Salman saw the South version of Bodyguard, he told the producer (Agnihotri) that only Kareena could fit the heroine's role. After the success of Dabangg and Ready, Salman is poised for a hat trick.”

Happy that Sallu campaigned for her, Bebo said her role as Divya helped her take her career to a new dimension.

“I am an actress, and I love doing different, challenging roles. I have always experimented with my looks and characters,” she told the press.

While she may be at the top of the game as a Bollywood leading lady, Bebo is also grateful of her older sister, who helped pave the way for Kareena’s entry into Hindi cinema. Now there are talks of Karisma making a “comeback” of sorts to the big screen, of which Kareena seemed thrilled.

“Karisma has been a fighter. She is a very strong girl. All that matters now is that she has emerged a winner,” Bebo said of her older sister. “And isn’t she looking her best? She is looking so radiant. She is simply glowing. I am very excited that she is making a comeback to the silver screen. I should be taking her kids on the sets.”

Perhaps Bebo should take her elder sister’s children to a Madame Tussauds, where the junior femme Kapoor is about to have a statue unveiled.

“It’s an absolute honor. The unveiling shall happen in October. My statue is going to travel for an exhibition to six different cities,” Bebo told reporters. “I wish my sister Karisma is there with me. She has always stood by me.”

While the statute unveiling is still a ways away, perhaps Karisma and the rest of Bollywood will be standing by Bebo’s side when 'Bodyguard' opens on August 31, 2011.
