Bollywood superstar actress Katrina Kaif is ready for the worldwide release of Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan during Christmas weekend, but if there is one thing the buxom beauty wants more than high box office receipts from Santa Claus this weekend, it would be a Filmfare Award. Okay, there will be no Filmfare Awards handed out in time for Christmas, but Ms. Kaif is certainly looking beyond this week’s release of her latest film, in which she stars opposite Akshay Kumar and Akshaye Khanna. Those pretty eyes of hers are dead set on the ‘Black Lady’ statuette that represents one of Bollywood’s most prestigious awards.
Days after appering with Mr. Kumar on the cover of Filmfare Magazine and being named Eastern Eye’s Sexiest Woman for the third consecutive year, Ms. Kaif said she is anything but passive in hoping she is presented with a Filmfare trophy.
As she lit a ceremonial lamp at Mumbai’s Shangri-La Hotel as part of her press appearance to announce the 56th Idea Filmfare Awards, Ms. Kaif held nothing back in admitting she really desires a Filmfare Award.
“I haven’t won a Filmfare award 'til now, and I am dying to win one. But I can never be a judge for myself whether I should get a Filmfare Award, as it’s for the audience to decide,” Ms. Kaif told reporters as she appeared for the Filmfare announcements and promoted Tees Maar Khan, which opens in the United States and United Kingdom on December 22nd and in India on December 24th.
Nominated for a Filmfare last year for her role in the Yash Raj release of New York, Ms. Kaif is slated to earn another nomination in the upcoming awards ceremony courtesy of Raajneeti. As she hopes to walk away with the trophy for Best Actress, Ms. Kaif was rather frank about the desire both her and her colleagues have in wanting to walk away with a Black Lady in their hands.
“Honestly, I think every actor who is a part of Bollywood wants to win,” she told reporters. “As far as I am concerned, I would say that I am not used to winning awards for the Best Actress, though I have put in as many as six years in the film industry ever since I made my debut with Kaizad Gustad’s Boom.”
With her six years of experience, Ms. Kaif did not shy away from commenting on what she believes to be the top films of 2010--many of which she expects to fare well at the upcoming Filmfares. Overall, she is very impressed with the current state of Hindi cinema--something Ms. Kaif believes is reflected in the Filmfare nominations, as well as how far along Bollywood films have come along.
“If I were to be on the jury of Filmfare Awards 2010, I’d say it’s a seriously tough year with films like Dabangg, My Name is Khan, Raajneeti, Guzaarish, Golmaal 3, and others in the fray,” Ms. Kaif told reporters. “Look at the type of films being made nowadays. It’s really commendable. Films like No One Killed Jessica is a classic example of this. I am amazed everyone is so excited about it, including me.”
As she is excited about the direction of Hindi cinema as a whole and about the prospects of being named Best Actress at the next Filmfare Awards, Ms. Kaif must certainly also hope for an equal amount of excitement and desire to watch Tees Maar Khan this weekend, which opens in the United States and United Kingdom on December 22nd (in anticipation of the Christmas holiday) and in India two days later.
