MUSIC REVIEW: 'BREAK KE BAAD' SOUNDTRACK

Vishal Dadlani Leads A Romantically Peppy Soundtrack With Lyrics Written By Prasoon Joshi

A romantic comedy film is not complete without a soundtrack full of romantic melodies, and Break Ke Baad (“After the Break”)--Bollywood’s latest blockbuster production--is no exception. Directed by Danish Aslam and starring Deepika Padukone alongside Imran Khan, the soundtrack for Break Ke Baad was released on the T-Series album and features six original tracks and two remixes. While Vishal Dadlani appears on a majority of the tracks, other notable voices include Sunidhi Chauhan, Shekhar Ravjiani, and Monica Dongra.

With Prasoon Joshi penning the lyrics to each tune, Vishal/Shekhar oversaw the direction of the Break Ke Baad soundtrack. Among the standout tracks in this solid film score are “Dooriyan Hain Zaroori Bhi Hai” and “Don’t Worry About Me.” Overall, the soundtrack is rather cliché, but that does not have to be a bad thing. Each tune has its own charm and character, and the Break Ke Baad soundtrack should find a happy medium with a majority of Bollywood audiences.

Buzzine Bollywood recommends this soundtrack, especially for those who are fans of the movie.

Overall Grade: B+

1. "Adhoore Tum Adhoore Hum"
Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Alyssa Mendonca
Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi
Time: 4:22
Grade: B+

Vishal Dadlani and Alyssa Mendonca deliver one of the more pleasant tracks on this soundtrack, as the duo seamlessly intertwine together in this warmly romantic tune which strikes a perfect chord with amorous listeners. From beginning to end, “Adhoore Tum Adhoore Hum” represents the essential spirit of the film.

2. "Ajab Leher Hai Meri"
Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjiani, Neeraj Sridhar, Rhys D’Souza
Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi
Time: 4:02
Grade: C

BREAK KE BAAD SOUNTRACKWith a little more pep and jazzy pizzazz, “Ajab Leher Hai Meri” has some head-nodding potential during the track’s peaks. Unfortunately, even with the ever-so-pleasant vocals of Mr. Dadlani, “Ajab Leher Hai Meri” is just your everyday average Bollypop tune found on just about every mainstream Hindi soundtrack release. This track would be better if the other three artists made more of a contribution.

3. "Dhoop Ke Makaan Sa"
Singers: Sunidhi Chauhan, Caralisa Monteiro, Shekhar Ravjiani, Mikey Mcclearyu
Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi
Time: 4:31
Grade: B+

“Dhoop Ke Makaan Sa” is a fitting tune for the Break Ke Baad soundtrack, featuring smooth melodies, romantic lyrics, and soft vocals one would expect to find on a romance-themed album. Even more, it is rather surprising to hear Sunidhi Chauhan--whose talents come alive on any given fast-paced track--perform rather well in this romantic number. Nothing is extraordinarily special about this track, but it fulfills its purpose as a well-tuned medley perfectly crafted for the affectionately cozy album and film.

4. "Dooriyan Hain Zaroori Bhi Hai"
Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Monica Dogra
Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi
Time: 4:09
Grade: A-

Mr. Dadlani returns yet again, this time with Monica Dogra in the most upbeat original track of the album. “Dooriyan Hain Zaroori Bhi Hai” takes many cues from the rock-and-roll genre, making it the latest poster child of Bollywood tunes with a strong western influence. Ms. Dogra is serviceable on this track, and Mr. Dadlani takes a backseat for once. Still, this track is very fun and is sure to pump some inspired energy into its listeners.

5. "Main Jiyoonga Main Jiyoonga"
Singers: Nikhil D’Souza, Mickey Mcclearyu, Gino Banks
Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi
Time: 3:10
Grade: B-

Mainstream Bollypop makes its presence felt again with “Main Jiyoonga Main Jiyoonga,” which is another not-so-memorable track that manages to still have a relevant place on this soundtrack. While it is a peppy track overall, the vocals can be a little better; the lyrics are what one would expect, but the fact that Break Ke Baad is a romantic-comedy saves this track from being completely overlooked.

6. "Don’t Worry About Me"
Singers: Vishal Dadlani
Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi
Time: 3:13
Grade: A-

Mr. Dadlani finally has a solo performance on this soundtrack, and he does not disappoint with “Don’t Worry About Me.” What makes this track work so well is it is adaptable for the big screen, as the tune’s lyrics and overall vibe are perfect to relay the emotions felt by the film’s two lead characters. It also helps to have Mr. Dadlani delivering yet another solid performance with his soft vocals.

7. "Adhoore Tum Adhoore Hum" (Remix)
Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Alyssa Mendonca
Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi
Time: 4:00
Grade: A-

The first of two remixes, “Adhoore Tum Adhoore Hum” starts with a bang and maintains its dancehall vibe throughout. Featuring strong happy-feet overtones, this catchy and peppy remix is easy to hum to and hard to get out of your head.

8. "Dhoop Ke Makaan Sa" (Acoustic Mix)
Singers: Sunidhi Chauhan, Shekhar Ravjiani, Hitesh Sonik
Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi
Time: 4:01
Grade: B+

As the title of this track infers, the acoustic version of “Dhoop Ke Makaan Sa” is soft and mellow. Do not expect any peaks and valleys in this track. Instead, the acoustic version of “Dhoop Ke Makaan Sa” has loads of potential to be the ideal romantic tune, save for a few minor lulls early on. The guitar chords dominating the track’s final 30 seconds are a welcome addition.
